Background of the Study
International legal reforms have been pivotal in the global fight against corruption, with the UN Convention against Corruption serving as a landmark instrument in this endeavor. The Convention provides a comprehensive framework for preventive measures, law enforcement cooperation, and asset recovery, aiming to enhance transparency and accountability in both public and private sectors (Miller, 2023). Countries that adopt these reforms align their domestic legal systems with international standards, thereby strengthening their anti-corruption mechanisms. The Convention encourages cross-border cooperation, enabling nations to share best practices and support each other in combating corruption. Its impact is evident in the gradual improvement of governance structures and the increased ability of states to prosecute corrupt practices. However, the effectiveness of these legal reforms is often challenged by institutional inertia, lack of political will, and resource constraints (Garcia, 2024). This study evaluates the role of international legal reforms, particularly through the UN Convention against Corruption, in curbing corrupt practices globally. It critically examines the successes and shortcomings of the Convention, with a focus on its implementation challenges and the subsequent effects on national anti-corruption efforts (Lee, 2025).
Statement of the problem
Despite the comprehensive framework provided by the UN Convention against Corruption, corruption remains pervasive in many countries. The voluntary nature of some reforms, combined with inadequate enforcement mechanisms, often results in uneven implementation. Institutional weaknesses, political interference, and limited resources further hinder the effective combat of corruption. This study aims to assess the impact of these international legal reforms and identify the barriers that prevent their full realization, with a view to proposing measures for more effective anti-corruption strategies (Miller, 2023; Lee, 2025).
